Lessons from the Mat: How 18 Years of BJJ Shapes My Work

Another January day, another reason to reflect. I’ve been training in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) for over 18 years, earning my black belt two years ago. Over nearly two decades, the mat has taught me lessons that reach far beyond the dojo, lessons that carry directly into how I approach business, leadership, and life.
BJJ is more than just physical. It’s about focus, discipline, and patience. Every roll on the mat forces you to think, adapt, and respond under pressure much like business. You learn that progress is rarely linear, small, consistent effort builds mastery over time.
It’s also about resilience and humility. Losing a match, getting submitted, or facing a tougher opponent reminds you that there’s always room to learn. The same applies in business: setbacks aren’t failures, they’re opportunities to adjust your approach and come back stronger.
One of the things I love most about BJJ is the people you meet. You train with an incredible variety of people from all walks of life, different ages, backgrounds, and professions. Everyone brings their own perspective, and the diversity of the community is inspiring.
Perhaps most importantly, BJJ teaches strategic thinking and situational awareness. You must read your opponent, anticipate moves, and act decisively. In business, this translates to reading markets, spotting opportunities in quiet moments, and knowing when to act versus wait.
Even after 18 years, every session reinforces habits that keep me disciplined and focused. The mat conditions your body, but it also sharpens your mind, making you better at planning, problem-solving, and handling pressure in professional life.
If you’re on the fence about trying it, just go for it. The lessons, the friendships, and the personal growth are worth every second. Martial arts aren’t just a hobby; they’re a mindset, and the lessons learned on the mat can provide clarity, resilience, and confidence in every other part of life, especially business.
It’s part of the reason I added “Dojo” to Media Dojo bringing that same focus, discipline, and mindset to the way we work and help others grow.
I may start blogging here about my journey and the lessons BJJ has taught me, sharing how they apply both on the mat and in business. Watch this Space
